Utah Alcohol Certifications: On-Premise vs. Off-Premise Sellers
Utah Alcohol Certifications Category Blog

Did you know that there is a different certificate for serving alcohol in Utah, depending whether you serve alcohol on premises or off premises? This is because some environments involve both the selling and serving of alcohol (on premise) while others are limited to alcohol sales that will be consumed off premise.

Let's dive deeper into the differences between these two types of alcohol sales and how the Utah Alcohol Certification and the Utah E.A.S.Y. Alcohol Certification are different.

On-Premise Alcohol Sales

On-premise alcohol permits are required for everyone who serves alcohol in a place where it’s consumed on site— bars, clubs, restaurants and taverns are a few examples. There is a bit more responsibility required in these environments for alcohol servers, as they must learn things like the effects of alcohol, how to identify ID cards and how to avoid over-serving patrons, among other training. If you’re in a role that involves on-premise alcohol service, you must get this certification within 30 days of employment and at least every three years after that.

The on-premise alcohol sales permit is officially called the Utah Alcohol Certification.

Off-Premise Alcohol Sales

Off-premise alcohol permits are a little different. As the Utah Department of Health & Human Services states on its website, “the E.A.S.Y. Law requires mandatory training for each store employee that sells beer or directly supervises the sale of beer. Training must be completed before employees sell alcohol and at least every 3 years after that. Stores may hire a trainer to train staff in person, purchase a training package to train their own staff, create and submit their own training for approval or an individual may take online training.”

The off-premise alcohol sales permit is officially called the Utah E.A.S.Y. Alcohol Certification.
