The state of Utah presents training certificates for both on-and off-premise sales and service of alcohol. You might find that the maze of Utah certifications is a bit confusing so we’re here to help you better understand the certificate(s) you need and why in this look at Utah’s E.A.S.Y. Training vs. Utah Alcohol Server Certification.
What is E.A.S.Y. Training in Utah
Utah’s “Eliminate Alcohol Sales to Youth” is exactly what it means. This is a training program designed to prevent the sale and consumption of alcohol by minors, legally defined as being under the age of 21. This is also referred to as “Off-Premise” training.
Your off-premise certificate is required by law for employees of businesses that sell any alcoholic beverage to go. This includes liquor stores, convenience stores, grocery stores and other similar operations where the consumption of alcohol is directed away from the business or location. Typically, a new hire is expected to acquire this certification within 30 days of employment and retesting is also required for those who are certified every five years thereafter.
Utah Alcohol Server Certification or “On-Premise” Training
If you work in a club, restaurant or bar then you must complete Utah’s on-premise training program and, yes, the requirement for retesting also applies but for on-premise purposes that test must take place every three years. The on-premise training is exactly what it sounds like. This is training for patrons who are served and expected to consume alcohol on location. There are subtle but important differences between on-and off-premise training.
If you feel as though this might be a lot of fuss, don’t forget that your managers are also required to pass on-premise retail management training. The idea here is to make sure that everyone knows how to serve and even protect the patrons while they are consuming alcohol on premise. Like the off-premise training, there is an emphasis on preventing minors from buying or consuming alcohol.
There are those in the service industry who refer to the on-premise training as the “Sips and Tips” certification. However, the idea here is to not take this certification lightly. It’s extremely important that servers are properly trained and know how to protect patrons from over-consuming while also recognizing fake IDs and keeping minors from buying or consuming alcohol from on-premise sellers and servers.
The Law of Alcohol Certification According to Utah
This is not a matter of company policy. The state of Utah requires these certifications for anyone who sells or serves alcohol. Again, training must be completed within 30 days of a new hire and, for those who have their certifications, the training must be repeated according to the terms of the certification you require.
The E.A.S.Y. Training and the Utah Alcohol Server Certification training can be summarized as on- vs. off-premise alcohol consumption training for Utah service professionals.
